Choose a spring hose clamp using the hose’s outside diameter (OD) after it is fully seated on the fitting—not the hose’s nominal inside diameter. Check the manufacturer’s spring hose clamp size chart for the recommended working range and sufficient opening clearance for installation. The fully opened diameter is not the same as the maximum recommended sealing diameter.

A 1/2-inch heater hose normally refers to its inside diameter. A thicker wall increases the outside diameter, so the original clamp may no longer fit. Select the heater hose clamp using the assembled hose OD and the clamp’s recommended working range—not the “1/2-inch” label alone. Do not force an undersized clamp onto the replacement hose.

Send OURU the measured OD and hose model to confirm a suitable size or kit and current availability before purchasing.

For compatible coolant connections, a spring-style constant tension hose clamp adjusts as the hose expands and contracts during heating and cooling. It has no adjustment screw and normally does not require retightening. A conventional worm gear hose clamp may need checking or retightening to its specified torque as the hose settles.

Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements rather than assuming either design suits every connection. Persistent leakage calls for inspection of the clamp, hose, and fitting—not repeated tightening alone

Replace the broken clamp, but inspect the entire connection before deciding what else to reuse. During a radiator hose clamp replacement, check the hose for cracks, hardening, swelling, and clamp damage. Inspect the fitting for deterioration, cracks, or damage to its sealing surface. Replace damaged components; a new clamp cannot repair a failed hose or connector.

Work only after the engine has cooled and the system has been safely depressurized according to the vehicle’s service instructions. Verify the repaired connection using the manufacturer’s leak-check procedure.

Use spring hose clamp pliers that securely engage the clamp’s tabs. A locking design can hold the clamp open without continuous hand pressure, making installation and removal easier.

Difficulty opening a clamp does not automatically mean it has failed: check tool fit, jaw positioning, and access first. We recommend replacing a cracked, heavily corroded, distorted, or persistently binding clamp rather than forcing it open or trying to reshape it. Do not make the substitution based on diameter alone. Use a coolant hose clamp style and size approved for the hose and fitting. Consider a worm drive hose clamp only when the vehicle or fitting manufacturer permits it and provides suitable tightening instructions. Screw-adjusted clamps can be overtightened, so additional tightening is not automatically a better seal.

Inspect the plastic connector before reuse and replace it if cracked or otherwise damaged. Where a screw clamp is approved, follow the specified torque rather than tightening until a leak disappears. A damaged connection needs repair, not extra clamping force.
