Choose Grease Fittings in 3 Steps

Choose by the equipment thread specification, access angle and kit contents. Match the complete thread specification, not the diameter alone.

1. Identify the thread specification

Check the equipment manual or existing fitting for the required SAE or metric thread specification before selecting a replacement.

2. Choose the access angle

Choose a straight fitting where the coupler approaches directly, or select a listed angled fitting when access is limited.

3. Check the kit contents

Confirm the selected kit includes the thread sizes, fitting angles and quantity needed for your maintenance work.

FAQ

Do I need a self-tapping fitting or a thread repair for a damaged grease port?

Identify the original thread and inspect the port before choosing replacement grease fittings. Thread forming grease fittings are designed for specified untapped holes; they are not a universal repair for stripped threads. Do not force in a larger fitting simply because the original one feels loose. Have a qualified technician determine whether an approved thread repair, oversize fitting, or component replacement is appropriate, while keeping machining debris out of the lubrication passage.

Why does grease come out around the fitting instead of going inside?

Check whether the coupler matches the fitting head and seats correctly before choosing another adapter. Poor engagement or a damaged coupler can cause leakage during pumping. Flush type grease fittings require a matching flush nozzle rather than a standard jaw coupler; certain low-profile U-joint fittings require a specified needle adapter. Identify the head design from the component instructions, and do not assume that any needle tip will fit.

Which adapter fits miniature or M4 grease fittings?

Choose the adapter by the lubrication-point design, not the mounting thread alone. For small grease fittings, record the complete thread specification, head diameter and profile, opening size, and surrounding clearance. An M4 mounting thread does not establish which coupler will seal against the head.

Compare these details with the equipment manufacturer’s nozzle requirements. Some linear-motion equipment requires dedicated nozzles and attachments. Do not force a larger needle into a small check-ball opening; obtain a confirmed adapter match first.

Should I choose straight, 45°, or 90° grease fittings?

Choose the angle that allows the coupler to connect and release without obstruction. Straight fittings suit direct access, while angled grease fittings can bring the lubrication point toward an accessible approach. Also allow room for the installation wrench, coupler body, and grease hose.

Confirm the thread specification separately from the angle. Do not overtighten a fitting simply to point it in the desired direction; choose a suitable fitting or adapter within the manufacturer’s installation requirements.

How do I diagnose clogged grease fittings?

Check the grease gun and coupler before assuming the fitting is blocked. If several lubrication points are affected, follow the gun’s troubleshooting procedure for trapped air, grease supply, or blocked delivery components. If only one point is affected, inspect that fitting and its passage for contamination or hardened grease.

Replace clogged grease fittings that cannot be restored using the approved service procedure. If a verified, working replacement still will not accept grease, investigate the downstream passage or component. Do not keep increasing pressure to force grease through a blockage.

Why does grease flow back out after I disconnect the gun?

First distinguish grease left on the surface from grease repeatedly emerging through the inlet. Grease zerk fittings use a spring-loaded check ball that closes after pumping stops. Persistent backflow warrants inspection of the ball, seat, and spring for contamination or damage; replace a fitting that no longer closes correctly.

If leakage occurs only while the gun is attached, inspect coupler engagement and condition instead. Grease leaking from the threaded base requires a separate check of the mounting connection.

How do I safely release a grease gun coupler stuck on a fitting?

Stop pumping and follow the grease gun manufacturer’s procedure for relieving pressure in the delivery hose. Then operate the coupler’s intended release mechanism. Some systems use a dedicated pressure-return valve; its procedure and compatibility are model-specific.

Do not pry against grease zerk fittings, pull forcefully on the hose, or loosen pressurized threaded connections. High-pressure grease can penetrate skin. If pressure cannot be safely relieved or the coupler remains locked, have the equipment serviced rather than forcing it apart.

Do newly installed parts with grease fittings need immediate lubrication?

Factory pregreasing does not always eliminate the need for lubrication during installation. For ball joints with grease fittings and other serviceable components, follow the component manufacturer’s initial-fill instructions and maintenance schedule—not an interval based solely on the fitting.

Use the specified grease and quantity, and account for operating conditions such as heavy use, water, and contamination. Do not assume every component should be pumped until grease escapes; excessive pressure or overfilling can damage seals or boots.

Does the OURU kit include SAE and metric sizes, and when is an assortment worthwhile?

The packing chart for OURU’s 260-piece grease fitting kit lists 1/4-28, 1/8-27, M6, M8, and M10 fittings in straight, 45°, and 90° configurations. It contains 180 metal fittings, 75 dust caps, and 5 wrenches—not 260 metal fittings. Confirm the full thread pitch and thread form needed for your equipment before ordering.

An assortment is worth considering when you regularly service several compatible sizes. For repeated replacement of one known size, compare a single-size pack instead. Judge value by the fittings you will actually use, rather than the total piece count.

How should I compare grease fitting assortment quality?

Compare documented specifications rather than price, brand name, or country of origin alone. For a grease fitting assortment, check thread identification, head dimensions, body material, corrosion protection, check-valve performance, and availability of replacement sizes. Ask for supporting specifications where sealing or durability claims affect your application.

Also distinguish body material from internal components: OURU’s current kit is described as galvanized steel, while its feature image identifies a stainless steel check ball. That does not make the entire fitting stainless steel.

Are all grease fittings the same size?

No. The mounting thread and the grease-gun connection are separate specifications. A fitting marked M6 × 1.0 may match the equipment port without confirming that your coupler fits its head.

Request the fitting’s declared head standard and dimensional drawing, then compare the head diameter, neck profile, and available engagement space with the coupler manufacturer’s requirements. Flush fittings, for example, require a different nozzle connection. Do not treat one quoted head diameter as universal across all fitting designs.

How can I protect grease fittings from corrosion and contamination?

Start by cleaning grease fittings before attaching the gun, then wipe away excess grease afterward. Use correctly fitting dust caps to help keep moisture and debris away from the lubrication point. Caps do not repair an already blocked or damaged fitting.

For demanding corrosive environments, consider stainless steel grease fittings approved for the equipment and exposure. Check the specified materials of the body, ball, and spring—not just the finish or appearance—and replace fittings with deterioration that affects sealing or operation.

Why does a 1/4-28 grease fitting become tight after only one turn?

Increasing resistance can be normal for certain tapered lubrication threads, but one tight turn does not establish correct installation. Some 1/4-28 taper thread grease fittings use SAE-LT threads designed for a specified straight 1/4-28 tapped hole. These differ from ordinary straight-thread fittings.

Confirm the fitting’s exact thread form, the hole specification, and the required installation depth or torque. Stop if the fitting enters crookedly or resistance rises unexpectedly. Do not use extra wrench force to compensate for an unidentified thread or damaged hole.

How do I find the correct replacement for a missing grease fitting?

Start with the equipment model and parts diagram. When selecting replacement grease fittings, confirm the mounting type, complete thread specification, head design, angle, and installed clearance. Do not assume that a missing fitting was threaded: drive-in and other designs also exist.

Compare the identified specification with the selected kit’s contents, then check that variant’s current availability. For an uncertain match, send OURU the equipment model, clear port photographs, and any confirmed measurements before purchasing; a kit labeled “SAE and Metric” does not guarantee coverage of every equipment port.

Galvanized Steel for Corrosion-Resistant Service

OURU fittings are made from galvanized steel to help resist rust, corrosion and oxidation. The protective finish provides a practical option for workshop maintenance and suitable outdoor equipment applications, supporting ongoing lubrication at compatible service points.

Match Metric and SAE Grease Fittings to Your Equipment

Choose metric grease fittings or SAE grease fittings according to the equipment’s specified connection. Available assortments include M6, M8 and M10 alongside inch-thread options; check each kit’s size breakdown before ordering.

To select the right grease fitting, confirm the thread diameter, pitch and whether the thread is tapered or parallel. Similar-looking fittings are not necessarily interchangeable, so match the complete thread specification rather than diameter alone.

Straight and Angled Fittings for Easier Access

Choose straight grease fittings where the grease gun coupler can approach directly. A 45-degree fitting or 90-degree grease fitting can offer a more accessible connection when surrounding components limit a straight approach.

Compare the fitting’s angle, overall dimensions and installation clearance alongside its thread specification. The right configuration helps keep lubrication points reachable during maintenance.

Lubricate Through Dedicated Service Points

With a compatible grease gun coupler attached, zerk fittings allow lubricant to enter through the equipment’s designated lubrication point. This provides a practical way to replenish grease during routine automotive and industrial servicing without opening the lubricated component where it is designed for external greasing.

Match the replacement fitting to the original connection and follow the equipment manufacturer’s lubrication instructions.
